Our group climbs have been scheduled to summit during full moon. A one day hike in the foothills surrounding Moshi has been build into the itinerary to give you maximum preparation physically and mentally. Being an easy hike it will give your body time to acclimatize and adjust to your new surroundings. It will also lessen the jet lag which you may have incurred during your trip to Moshi.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport where a representative of Local Moshi will greet you. From there you will be driven to your hotel in Moshi where dinner and a comfortable room are awaiting you. Team briefing; meet your guides and fellow climbers.
5-6 hours of hiking
After breakfast drive to Machame Gate. Meet porters and complete registration formalities at the ranger’s office. The hike starts in lush rainforest leading upwards into the thinning forest, long grasses and giant heathers surrounding Machame Hut (3000m), the first campsite on the Machame Route. En route you will enjoy a picnic lunch.
7-9 hours of hiking
Wake up to amazing views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The hike starts east toward Kibo. As the path continues to ascent it reveals stunning views of Kibo ahead. After lunch at Lava Tower (4540m) the trail descents toward Barranco Camp (3940m), surrounded by senecio and lobelia and with extensive views of the plains below.
11-15 hours of hiking
The final ascent will start about 1 am. A slow and steady climb of 5-6 hours, zig-zaging across the volcanic scree of the crater rim will lead us to Stella Point (5752m) in time for sunrise. From here a one hour climb, passing the stunning glaciers and ice cliffs alongside the crater rim, will lead to Uhuru Peak (5895m).
From Uhuru Peak, descending back to Barafu Camp is much shorter. After refreshing briefly at Barafu, the trail continues steadily downward, to Millenium Camp (3810m), the final campsite on the mountain before returning to Moshi the following day.
Breakfast, equipment check, verification of mandatory travel/medical insurance. Following is a short acclimatization hike involving light hiking in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Return to hotel.
4-5 hours of hiking
Leaving Machame Hut, the last of the trees disappear as the trail continues upward on a rocky ridge of volcanic petrified lava, on top of which lunch awaits you. After lunch, a one hour hike, with ever decreasing vegetation along the way, Shira Hut (3800m), your camp for the night is within sight.
7-11 hours of hiking
The day starts with a steep climb requiring an occasional hand scramble up the Barranco Wall on the south eastern side of Kibo. The ground changes into scree with only the hardiest of vegetation surviving at this altitude. The trail passes Karanga Camp (3990m) and continues to gain altitude until reaching Barafu Hut (4600m), from where the final ascent will start in the early morning hours.
4-6 hours of hiking
After a good night’s rest, a continued descent past Mweka Hut campsite, will lead back into the lovely rain forest on the lower slopes of the Mountain, with the route winding down toward Mweka Gate (1645m). From there a short drive past coffee plantations and banana farms will take us to your hotel in Moshi.
After breakfast, we will take you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
For those of you with additional days to spare in Tanzania, the Local Moshi Team will be happy to assist you in planning a Safari, Cultural Tour or Zanzibar just for you.
