Our group climbs have been scheduled to summit during full moon. A one day hike in the foothills surrounding Moshi has been build into the itinerary to give you maximum preparation physically and mentally. Being an easy hike it will give your body time to acclimatize and adjust to your new surroundings. It will also lessen the jet lag which you may have incurred during your trip to Moshi.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) where a Local Moshi representative will greet you. From there you will be driven to your hotel in Moshi where dinner and a comfortable room are awaiting you. Team briefing; meet your guides and fellow climbers.
Breakfast, transfer to Snow Cap Cottages (1950m) at the entrance of the Rongai Route. After lunch enjoy an afternoon hike in the beautiiful surroundings of Snow Cap Cottages. Dinner and much rest for your first day of hiking beginning the following morning.
6-7 hours of hiking
Leaving Simba Camp the trail leads westwards going steadily upwards thru heath and moorland zone. Lunch stop is at Second Cave (3450m) After lunch the path continues gently upwards past a canyon, dry riverbeds and slowly decreasing vegetation until Kikelewa Camp (3600m) appears in the distance. The tents are situated on a hill. On a clear day you will find the mighty Kibo towering behind you, and have beautiful views of the Kenya Plains and villages, 3600m below.
5-6 hours of hiking
Today’s hike will start of steep in a westward direction, but soon flatten as you walk across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Hut (4703m). Slowly the landscape begins to resemble more of a moonscape as all vegetation, with the exception of a few Everlastings clinging on to life, has completely disappeared. Kibo Hut will be your final camp before starting your summit bid in the early morning hours around 1 am.
5-6 hours of hiking
The descent from Horombo is gentle in comparison to the previous day and you get to enjoy beautiful scenery, from senecio kilimanjari trees, heath and moorland, tussock grasses and heathers, to rainforest, once more. Mandara Hut (2700m) will be your lunch stop before reaching Marangu Gate, where your golden certificate awaits you, about 1½ to 2 hours later. From here we will transfer back to your hotel.
Breakfast, equipment check, verification of mandatory travel/medical insurance. Afterwards acclimatization hike involving light hiking in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Return to hotel for dinner and relaxation.
3-4 hours of hiking
Breakfast, meet your porters, complete registration formalities at the Ranger's Office. Hike begins from Nale Moro thru farmland and maize fields, then rain forest, home to a variety of wildlife. The path climbs steadily, the forest thins out and turns into moorland zone with great vies of the Kenyan Plains before arriving at Simba Camp (2700m).
3-4 hours of hiking
Day 6 is a fairly short, although steep day, occasionally steep enough for a possible hand scramble, however rewarded by excellent views. The landscape slowly changes from moorland vegetation of long grasses and heath, to everlastings and other robust plant species. After 3-4 hours of hiking you will reach Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m), your surroundings now being a rocky, craggy and misty mountainscape.
11-15 hours of hiking
Leaving Kibo Hut around 1am we wil be making our way toward Hans Meyer Cave. Beyond the cave, which is a small hollow, the trail steepens and we will be zigzaging up the crater rim accross small volcanic scree and gravel up to Gilman's (5680m). After a short rest at Gilman's Point we will continue toward Stella Point (5745m) and finally Uhuru Peak enjoying the spectacular views of the glaciers on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. We will leave Uhuru Peak by carefully tracing our steps back to Stella and Gilman's point, reaching Kibo Hut about three hours later. Here you wil have your first true rest break and a hot meal before continuing to Horombo Hut (3720m) where you will spend your last night on the mountain.
After breakfast, we will take you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
