The Cradle of Mankind
Tanzania is located between the Equator and the Great Rift Valley. It is here, in the Laetoli region of northern Tanzania, where archeologists found footprints of the earliest known hominins and immediate ancestors of humans, dating 3.6 million years ago. Also discovered in north eastern Tanzania, in and around the Oldupai Gorge, yet another of the world's earliest indication of humans; bones dating back nearly two million years ago. It is in this area of East Africa where our ancestors walked and which is often described as the "Cradle of Mankind".
